A Delightful Time in Phenom Penh

For many travelers backpacking through Southeast Asia, Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, is little more than a brief stopover on the way to Angkor Wat or the beaches of the south. But if you give the city more than a couple of days, you’ll discover that it has far more to offer.

Learn about Cambodia’s Past

A visit to Phnom Penh isn’t complete without learning about one of the darkest chapters in the country’s history. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) and the Killing Fields provide a sobering look at the Khmer Rouge regime, which claimed nearly 25% of Cambodia’s population in the late 1970s. These sites are difficult but essential experiences that shed light on the resilience of the Cambodian people today.

Markets and Street Life

Phnom Penh is also a city of vibrant markets. Wander through the lively Night Market along the riverside or dive into the maze-like stalls of the Russian Market, where you’ll find everything from souvenirs to street food and motor cycle parts. Both are perfect spots to sample local snacks, shop for handicrafts, or simply people-watch.

Where to Stay

Backpackers will find no shortage of budget hostels, some even with swimming pools to cool off in after a hot day of sightseeing. For those wanting to splurge, NagaWorld, a luxury resort and casino, offers a completely different experience.

Exploring Beyond the City

One of the best ways to explore Phnom Penh’s surroundings is by renting a motorbike. Just outside the city limits lies lush countryside dotted with small villages. Adventurous eaters may also want to make the trip to Sukhon, a well-known spot to try a famous delicacy: fried tarantulas.

Getting Around

Within the city, the main form of transportation is the tuk tuk. They’re cheap, convenient, and everywhere—but be sure to negotiate the price before hopping in to avoid any surprises. When it’s time to move on, most hostels can easily arrange onward travel by bus or minivan to destinations across Cambodia.

Don’t just pass through Phnom Penh. Spend a few extra days—it’s a city that rewards those who take the time to look beyond the surface.
